Liposuction is a great solution to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat for men and women alike. Fat does not discriminate and both men and women can face challenges trying to lose those deposits of fat that just won’t seem to budge. The main differences between liposuction for men and women is how a surgeon may sculpt different areas to create a more masculine vs feminine physique and which areas are more commonly treated for men vs. women. The top three areas we perform lipo for men in Houston each year includes the abdomen, flanks, and the chest.

Abdomen Liposuction for Men

You may have guessed it, but the abdomen is by far one of the most common liposuction areas for men in Houston. Men are typically higher in testosterone making them more prone to store fat in the abdominal area affecting the definition of the abs. Often this extra fat gets referred to as a “beer-belly” or the more endearing term “dad-bod”.  Liposuction can eliminate the stubborn beer-belly; however, lipo can only remove subcutaneous fat around the abdomen and many men tend to have mostly visceral, or, both visceral fat and subcutaneous around the abdomen. If you’re not sure how much visceral vs. subcutaneous fat you have, the best thing to do is to schedule a consultation.

Flanks Liposuction for Men

Next up, and just around the corner from the abdomen, is another popular liposuction area for men at Houston Lipo Center – the flanks or ‘love handles’. Extra fat around the flanks and lower abs can give men a “spare tire” effect. It can be a frustrating area to try to reduce through diet and exercise alone, but luckily, this area is typically composed of all subcutaneous fat, making it one of the best areas for lipo.

Chest Liposuction for Men

The male chest is our third most treated lipo area for men in Houston. Excess fat on the pecs can simply be due to weight gain, or it can often be caused by a medical condition called pseudo-gynecomastia. This condition causes fat to store in the chest area creating feminine looking breasts (aka man boobs). It often leaves men feeling self-conscious and discouraged when diet and exercise are not effective at reducing the excess fat on the pecs. Fortunately, liposuction is a highly effective option for men wanting to remove ‘man-boobs’ or reduce the chest to correct their pseudo-gynecomastia. It is important to note the difference between pseudo- and ‘true’ gynecomastia. True gynecomastia is the accumulation of excess glandular tissue rather than fat and cannot be resolved with lipo. If you’re not sure if you have pseudo-gynecomastia or true gynecomastia, we recommend a consultation with one of our skilled surgeons.

About SmartLipo for Men at Houston Lipo Center

There is no difference in liposuction for men and women when it comes to the procedure itself. We perform all liposuction under local anesthesia. The lipo procedure involves only a few tiny incisions, made with a circular biopsy punch (no scalpels), that are only 1 to 2 mm wide.  Once the entry points are created, the surgeon will infuse a solution with local anesthetic (tumescent fluid) into the area being treated.  After the area is numb, a laser is used to soften the fat and stimulate skin tightening in the area. The fat cells are then suctioned out using “micro” cannulas. There is little-to-no downtime, however there are some restrictions in the days after your surgery. Depending on the areas you have chosen to treat, you may need to take one or two days off work. There may also be some drainage over the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. You will be given a compression garment to be worn for about 2 weeks, depending on the area treated. Mild swelling and bruising can be experienced by some patients. During the first 2 weeks after your procedure, you can return to light exercise (no high-impact exercise). After two weeks you will have another follow-up appointment. At that time, most patients can return to their normal activities, including high-impact exercise.
