Myth #1: You don’t need to diet and exercise. As long as you have enough money, you can buy the body you want with lipo.

Fact: Liposuction is not a replacement for diet and exercise. You can’t walk into the operating room 100lbs overweight and walk out looking like a movie star. Lipo can produce some amazing results – but there’s no way to instantly “fix” your body if you have been neglecting healthy habits. Ideal patients (the ones that will see the best results) are within 20-30 lbs of their goal weight, are healthy and active, and have good skin elasticity.

Myth #2: Fat grows back (or moves around) after liposuction.

Fact: Adults have a set number of fat cells that grow or shrink in response to the number of calories they consume. Once fat cells are removed through liposuction, they’re no longer physically in your body – and no, they won’t re-grow. If you lose a finger, it won’t re-grow. Fat cells are the same.

But just because fat doesn’t re-grow doesn’t mean your body’s weight is now “set” and you can never gain weight again. Eating more calories will still cause you to gain weight. The misconception that fat “moves around” comes from that fact that with less fat cells in the treated area, weight gain will be distributed towards body areas that haven’t been treated.

Myth #3: You can get the same results as liposuction from body wraps or non-surgical fat reduction procedures.

Fact: Liposuction is the most effective method of sculpting the body to remove unwanted fat. While there are many non-surgical procedures that can remove fat, none of them are as effective at removing as much fat or as quickly as liposuction. These procedures are designed to remove a much smaller amount of fat, so while many of them do work, they aren’t a replacement for lipo.

Myth #4: A certain “brand” of lipo will guarantee good results.

Fact: The skill of the surgeon is always more important than the “brand name” or type of liposuction procedure performed. Unlike a product such as a car or television that comes off an assembly line, liposuction is a completely customized surgical procedure that needs to be tailored to your body and your goals, so a brand name doesn’t mean as much as you might think. You wouldn’t select a carpenter based on the brand of hammer they use – and a surgeon should not be any different in this regard. There are a lot of “brands” out there, but ultimately you should be looking at before and after results from the surgeon that is performing your surgery to make a determination.

Myth #5: Liposuction is something that’s just for women.

Fact: This is an assumption we hear a lot, but there’s nothing about liposuction that says it can’t be performed on men, too. Fat doesn’t discriminate – anyone, regardless of gender can shape or sculpt their body with liposuction.
